After Santa Barbara Police Chief Carlton "Lassie" Lassiter is ambushed on the job and left for dead, he begins to see impossible happenings around his recovery clinic. What they uncover will change the course of their lives forever. Shawn and Gus arrive at the Viking's Den, where bartender Alina tells them that Tileback had dark secrets which were being exposed.

Shawn guesses that Ova's secrets came out while he was at the Herschel House resulting in someone trying to blackmail Per with the information. Per says that someone tried, but Per instead became a partner with the blackmailer. While talking to Wilkerson, Shawn realizes the ice chips they have been eating must have a psychotropic drug in them making someone who eats them want to confess things. This is why Shawn and Gus couldn't help confessing things to Dr. Herschel in the stables previously.

Instead of committing suicide, Lassiter allows her to poison his drip. He asks her why she would let herself be mixed up in Dr. Herschel's scheme, but she reveals that it was entirely her idea and Dr. Herschel knows nothing about it. Lassiter settles back for a painless death, but then his father appears in a hallucination once more. Lassiter tells him that he felt betrayed by him because he wasn't able to say goodbye as a result of his unexpected death during a routine bypass surgery.

As Gus leaves the room to snatch some of the home's snacks, Shawn expresses his concern over Juliet's pregnancy to a sleeping Lassiter. Woody has studied everything about Catalon on the plane to Santa Barbara and is brimming with confidence. He enters the home and is allowed in by receptionist Shannon , despite not being able to spell Catalon's name. Shawn wants to go undercover and starts pressing Henry to reveal where he has hidden his mustache collection. Henry insults Shawn for his immaturity, and Shawn is visibly hurt. Henry then reasons that Lassiter isn't the type to go crazy and convinces them to take him seriously.

Woody, Shawn and Gus find bloodied clothes hidden among the medical supplies and them alongside Shawn's father Henry, attempt to convince Dolores - a nurse with a crush on Gus - that Herschel is guilty. In the ice bar, Shawn mentions that he has only been to Norway once, with his brother in law, and Gus says that they don't talk about it.

Henry enters Lassiter's room and apologizes to Shawn for hurting his feelings earlier. Selene now joins the two, and Juliet introduces her as Gus's girlfriend. Buzz misunderstands the situation and thinks Selene must be the nurse he has heard about. Selene is enraged and decides to go to the Herschel House on her own. As she walks towards Juliet's car, Shawn and Gus have to make a quick escape across the front seats to remain unseen, and in the process Shawn finds a positive pregnancy test he concludes to be Juliet's.

Some days later, the silhouetted man that would go on to shoot Lassiter went to Tileback's office and blackmailed him.

Lassiter hands her a list of errands with which she can help. Lassiter is shot, and then begins to see impossible happenings around his recovery clinic. Shawn and Gus return to the Chief's side in Santa Barbara and are forced to navigate the personal, the professional, and possibly the supernatural. What they uncover will change the course of their relationships forever. Shawn’s psychic scam is less of a focus in this story than before, but his skill with perception and attention to detail continues to prove an asset to the gumshoe team. To the puzzlement of the committee chair , Karen excuses herself from the room and recommends another candidate for the role. The duo then meet Ova Asblorn , who owns the bar and considers it his second chapter after his first business back in Norway. Shawn notices a fellow patron eyeing them threateningly and Ova explains that this is his son Per , who is not pleased with his father's career choices. Karen accosts Juliet before she leaves the station, and Juliet asks her excitedly whether she got the California police commissioner role she was being considered for. Karen says that there is still a final interview to get through, and then reminds Juliet that she should be honest about her secret investigation of Lassiter's case. As Juliet is about to leave, Selene joins her on her trip to Santa Barbara because she wants to scope out the Dolores situation.
